David Bayer is one of the founders of an internet technology company called Databanq Media Network. Their internet marketing blog has some really useful information on topics such as social networking, and on how to value an internet marketing company.
One topic I found really interesting on their blog is about orphan pages and their effect on supplementals and rankings. I have a business site that has been in existence for more than five years and since that time I have renamed a few pages on the site. What I didn't know is that orphans affect my site's rankings because "they disrupt an effective linking architecture and become drains on the page rank of other pages within the same domain". How do they do that? The original pages with the original urls structure will continue to be indexed unless applied with a 301 or 404 status codes.
Check out Databanq Media's technology blog for more interesting and informational articles.
